REVIEWING PAST BELIEFS

January 26, 2026

WHAT HAVE YOUR BELIEFS BEEN?

I’ve heard many people say they are relieved 2025 is behind them and 2026 must be better.  Looking back on 2025, what are the things that we are remembering? Do we focus on the positive or happy events or just the negative or challenging?

We tend to focus on the negative, possibly because we haven’t worked through our difficult events. For some, last year may have brought  job loss, for others it may have been health issues, the loss of a job or relationship, or possibly the angst around the world’s political climate.  It is normal for us to want to move away from these things and seek days filled with less pain.

Getting there isn’t about ignoring the pain or stuffing in a back corner of our mind.  It is about curiosity, compassion and a bit of surrender.  How do we live on days with some circumstances that don’t change or we can’t control?

A few years ago I learned to review past (or current) events with massive curiosity, zero judgement, questioning if it’s actually true and then creating a new belief that helps me move forward.  I love this practice and it brings relief and freedom.

Growing up I don’t remember a lot of teaching or mentoring on how to move ahead after life's challenges.  In my family it was, don’t cry, everything is ok, pull up your bootstraps and put a brave face on.  There were often undertones of blame around some of issues too which left me with confused and uncomfortable.  Was this supposed to be my lesson or mentoring?  I only learned to suck it up and don't talk about it. What was your conditioning from previous years?

As an adult we can get curious about what beliefs we have learned. In questioning, we find out if they are true or not. If not we create ones that are based in real truth and that align with us.  In seeking the truth, we also see if situations are in our control or not.  If they are, here lies an opportunity to learn from the mistake.  If they are not, it is an opportunity to move beyond the event with a new and healthy belief about it.  This allows us to move forward and feel better within ourselves.  Isn’t that what we are trying to achieve?  We all want to feel better about life.

In 2026 I encourage you to identify some old conditioning that doesn’t serve you, get curious, find out whether they are true or not and create new beliefs that better serve you going forward.

Together let’s meet 2026 with a strong set of tools for life’s challenges.

With much kindness,

Michelle Nesbitt
